Hamilton (Appropriate) Cocktail

The Hamilton (Appropriate) Cocktail is an intersection of #ThirstyThursday, Disney+, the Other Kid, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the Fourth of July. Disney+ is helping celebrate this Independence Day by premiering the movie version of Hamilton on July 3. We’ve been fortunate enough to see the stage version in Chicago. Even the Canadian was impressed with the show. But clocking over 2.5 hours, a Hamilton (Appropriate) Cocktail is in order.

Stream Appropriately

The Other Kid is a huge musical theater fan, and had memorized the entire soundtrack for Hamilton well in advance of going to see the show with me. Her birthday is also over this weekend, so having her come for the movie streaming premier, and our Stuffed Burgers, and Sous Vide Cheesecakes (both recipes coming soon!) is all a great fit for her. But she’s not quite ready for the Hamilton (Appropriate) Cocktail. Give her another year or so before she can enjoy #ThirstyThursday with us.

At the Chicago shows of Hamilton, the theatre featured a Hamilton Cocktail; Hennessy cognac, ginger ale, and lime. Simple, refreshing, and in a commemorative cup! So, appropriate for Independence Day, and appropriate Hamilton streaming! The Hamilton (Appropriate) Cocktail touches all the bases (American Baseball analogy)! ‘Merica!

Searching Hamilton-themed Drinks

There are all kinds of Hamilton-themed drinks and cocktails. The Founders’ Fizz (Gin, lime, and soda) was the original at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York, @lin_manuel approved. But there are all kinds of recipes online, featuring applejack (period appropriate), rum (born in St. Kitts), Hamilton-labled bottles, and even a Hamilton wine. But for simplicity, the Hamilton (Appropriate) Cocktail wins the duel.

Having a bottle of Hennessy in the house makes preparing the Hamilton (Appropriate) Cocktail easy. Fill a highball glass with ice, add 1.5 oz of Hennessy VSOP cognac, a splash of lime juice (half fresh lime squeezed) and top with ginger ale. Garnish with a lime wedge. Repeat after intermission!

Ingredients

• 1.5 oz Hennessy Cognac
• 3.5 oz Ginger Ale
• .25 oz Fresh Lime Juice
• Ice

Instructions

• Fill highball or pint glass with ice
• Add 1.5 ounce (shot and a half) of Hennessy VSOP
• Squeeze fresh lime or add lime juice
• Top with Ginger Ale
• Stir and Serve

Notes

Canada Dry makes a “Bold” Ginger Ale. Use that for more bite. Sugar Free or Diet Ginger Ale at your own risk

Hennessy VSOP Cognac is the base, but lime and ginger ale will work with about anything. Gin, Vodka, and even Brandy are possible

Have a box of tissues for streaming Hamilton (Spoiler: Alexander is the one who loses the duel)
