Walking Tacos, or Tacos in a Bag, have been a tradition in our meal options when we head to Algonquin Park. They are easy to make, require few dishes, and everyone loves them. Unfortunately they aren’t the most photogenic food, but they more than make up for it in taste and fun! Who doesn’t love a taco after all!
Tradition
Tacos in a bag was the last meal my mom made for us every year. We’d always have lunch before leaving on Saturday. Trying to get as much of the day and a last swim in before you go. Sitting on the steps of the house, looking out at the lake, sad to go, but ready for a hot shower.
The best part about these, as far as my mom was concerned, is that there were few dishes. When we were kids, we didn’t like all the fancy toppings. Just the chips, meat, cheese, salsa and sour cream. As we got older (and started to help more) we added some of the fancier toppings.
Looking for a quick and easy sleepover meal? The great thing about Walking Tacos is kids can top them any way they like. They are fun, simple, easy, and can be eaten anywhere. The Kid told me they actually serve them as school lunch sometimes. Not when I was young, but why not, I guess!
Prep Ahead
You can make the taco meat in advance. My mom usually did and then froze it to take with us. My parents go up to the cabin for two weeks. So, if they can take anything frozen, they do. Since it’s the last meal, she doesn’t thaw it until a day or two before we leave to go home. Then, all she has to do is reheat it. Mom always made sure she had a “hidden” jar of salsa and bag of shredded cheese. That way there were toppings and we didn’t eat them before the Walking Tacos.
Chip Choices
Some are die hard Doritos fans for Walking Tacos. (I hate Doritos). The Kid loves Fritos. For me, it’s Tostitos all the way. They are harder to find in the single serving size, though. That used to drive my mom nuts. We’d look at convenience stores and gas stations. We had to hunt them down before we headed up north! Whatever your chip of choice, cut the bag along the side, not the top. It makes them easier to eat with a larger opening to work with.
