Butter Tarts are all Canadian. This gooey sweet tart can be filled with raisins, nuts or left plain. How you make them can start a very polite argument!
In a large bowl dissolve the sugar into the beaten eggs
Add the syrup and melted butter and stir to combine
If adding raisins or pecans add a few to the bottom of each tart shell
Fill the tart shells with the sugar mixture until they are ¾ full
Bake for 15 min, they should be gooey and the shells should have browned
Notes
In Canada you can buy pre-made tart shells from Tenderflake. These made baking batches of Butter Tarts super easy. The tart shell is just a vessel for the gooey goodness inside so my mom and grandma I don't think ever took the time to make them with actual pastry.I have not been able to find pre-made tart shells in the US. Pie dough, yes. Which is the same thing but you have to stuff it into shells. You can use that, or your favorite pastry recipe to make the tart shells.
